Welcome to the Turnpike Basketball Travel Program!

Our Travel Program offers our top developing players the opportunity to play against advanced competition, primarily in the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League (FCYBL) and Fairfax Stars Summer League

Turnpike Basketball has a 50+ year history of producing high-quality, high-character teams and student athletes that produce at the highest level.  It is our philosophy that if the team succeeds the individual recognition will follow.  In the last decade alone, our Travel program has produced:

  • 7 Virginia State High School Championship players
  • 4 FCYBL Team Championships
  • 4 League MVP's
  • 7 FCYBL Coach of the Year Awards
  • 63 All-County Awards for individual players

We invite you to join us and add to our proud tradition.

Fall / Winter Program Information

During the Winter Season, Turnpike Basketball teams compete in the FCYBL.  The FCYBL has separate leagues for boys and girls in each grade level from 5th through 8th.  Players in 4th grade may play for 5th grade teams.

Once the school year begins, watch our schedule closely, since Travel Team tryouts start at the beginning of October.

Player Eligibility

  • Players are eligible to play in our Travel Program if the player is:
    • Registered and paid in full;
    • In 4th through 8th grade; and
    • A resident of the 22003, 22032, 22031, 22030, 22151 zip codes or an approved exception.
      • NOTE:  Each team is permitted two zip code exceptions, but these players must be Fairfax County, Falls Church, Fairfax City or Alexandria residents.

  • Registration opens in late August.
Open Gyms
  • All Turnpike-registered 4th through 8th grade players will be invited to participate our Fall Open Gyms program.
  • No player is required to attend, but our September open gyms are a good opportunity to meet our coaching staff and potential teammates.
  • Team tryouts are held during the first two weeks of October.
  • All players trying out must be registered (there is no cost to register for tryouts).
  • After tryouts, you will be notified as quickly as possible whether or not your player has made the team.

Winter Season

  • Practices begin in October once the teams are selected.
  • Teams will generally have two 75- to 90-minute weeknight practices each week from October to March.
Regular Season
  • The FCYBL regular season runs from mid-November to February.
  • Teams play 1-2 games per week for a total of approximately 13 or 14 games in the regular season.
  • Most games are played during the weekend, but weeknight games are possible.
  • Click here for a list of FCYBL facilities for potential game locations.
  • The top 75% or top 12 teams in each division, whichever is less, will make the playoffs.
  • All FCYBL playoff games are completed by early March.

Spring / Summer Program Information

Each year, several of our travel-level teams compete in the Fairfax Stars Summer League.  Our participating teams tend to have players ranging from rising 4th graders through rising 8th graders.

Player Eligibility

  • All age-appropriate players are eligible to play on one of our Summer League teams.
  • Fairfax County requires a $30 non-resident fee from players living outside of Fairfax County.

Opens in March.

Spring open gyms & Practices

  • All interested players are invited to join our Spring Open Gym Program in March.  Coaches will be on hand to evaluate and select players to participate on our Summer League teams.
  • Once a team is formed, it will hold weekly practices through the last week of school in June.
  • All practices will be held on weeknights.

Summer league play

  • The Summer regular season runs for 5 weeks starting on the first week after school ends in June.
  • All games are played on weeknights.
