On March 6, our Turnpike 6th Grade Boys county team defeated Arlington, 37-22, to win the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League (FCBYL) Boys 6th Grade Division 3 league championship. The win at Jackson Middle School, led by outstanding coaches Mike Battaglia and Paul Tryon and Championship Game MVP Matheo Rojas, completed a perfect 16-0 season.
The boys earned the #1 seed in the playoffs with a 13-0 regular-season record, then beat Lee-Mt. Vernon and South Loudon in the playoffs to reach the final. Our opponent, 6th-seeded Arlington, upset two other clubs to reach the finals.
Our work was cut out for us, as Arlington sought revenge for a 27-23 loss to our 6th graders back in December, our smallest margin of victory of the season. However, our boys held strong in an impressive championship game performance to remove all doubt.
In addition to Matheo’s award for his stellar performance in the Championship Game, teammates Peter Pesansky, Jack Garwood and Luke Tryon all won FCYBL All-County honors for their efforts over the entire season. No other team in the 13-team Division had as many as three players selected for All-County accolades.
At this level of competition, an undefeated season is exceedingly rare. In fact, FCYBL itself has recognized the achievement by promoting the team to Division 2 next season.
We at Turnpike are very proud of the Coaches and the boys for their accomplishments. We look forward to watching them play next season and beyond.
Congratulations to the entire team!
